Copacabana Beach Day

Rhonda: Hi y'all. We finally got to sleep late! We woke up at 9am and were so happy to have a lazy day. We had a couple of errands to go do before the ship tomorrow. And then found some lunch at a sidewalk cafe looking at the water. That never gets old. We had a

Brazilian pizza, also referred to as Portuguese pizza by some, it's a delicious combination of classic pizza sauce, ham, onions, olives, cheese, and hard-boiled eggs.

It's served with peppers in some oil. I have to say it sounds odd but it was amazing!

Chris: The pizza was amazing, it was a wonderful lunch with a great view of the beach. After lunch we went back to the hotel and changed into swim suits and headed out to Copacabana beach. It's a lot like Miami here, there are all the hotels then a super busy street then the beach. It's maybe fifty yards or so to the water after you cross the street but it's beautiful sand all the way. We rented two chairs and an umbrella for less than eight US dollars and a very nice man who was running the rental found us as good a spot as possible considering it is Saturday and it was super crowded on the beach.

We have read on travel sites and were warned by guides and hotel staff that purse and backpack snatching and pick pockets are a big problem here so we had already decided that we couldn't get in the water together because we had one of our backpacks with us. We were never afraid in Rio and we never felt threatened but we have been hyper vigilant for snatchers and pick pockets. But not going into the water together turned out to be a non issue after I saw the size of the waves hitting the beach. They were awesome to look at but I'm from Lubbock Texas, I never saw more water than you take a bath in until I was thirty years old so I was a hard no on getting into that water. I saw way too many people get knocked down in less than two feet of water and struggle to get out. This Lubbock boy takes a pass !

Rhonda: It was interesting that from the street all the way up where you rent chairs they have a soaker hose. It keeps the sand wet in a trail so it's easier and cooler to walk on.

Besides the waves being tall that water was ice water. I went and put my feet in and next I knew it was hitting my knees. I hightailed it back to my chair before I got knocked down. This beach is stunning from afar. But when you are sitting there it's hard to overlook all of the cigarette butts , empty water bottles and other trash. Guys pick up the cans to get money for them but not the other trash. And, I have never seen more vendors on a beach.

It was all of that, but I love it here and I would very much like to come back and see Carnival.

We got back to the hotel and took a nap and hung out at the rooftop pool bar the rest of the evening. We are so excited to get on the ship and start part two of this adventure tomorrow. It's hard to believe we are not even half way done yet. There is lots and lots still to do. But for now ..... it's to bed for us!

Love y'all.
